Dear Parents,

As you probably know there is a possibility that Mt. Redoubt may erupt in the coming days. Depending on the wind conditions and strength of eruption, it is possible that schools within Anchorage may need to close. As with other school closures, Anchorage Montessori School will follow the lead of the Anchorage School District. If a full school day of school closure is necessary, we will use the automated phone system to get the word out. If a mid-day closure is needed, we will attempt to reach all parents by our automated phone system and email.

Experts at the Alaska Volcano Observatory predict that Anchorage should have at least two hours of notice before an ash cloud would reach our school, so there should be enough time for parents to pick up children and drive home. Our school has masks for each child, as well as supplies of water and food if needed. School staff would of course remain at the school until all children are picked up.

Information about ash cloud related school closures will be available on Channel 14, e-mail, our school blog available through our website, through the AMS phone line message outside of the school day, the Anchorage School District emergency recording (742-4000), and major media. Please contact me with any questions.

Carnival this weekend!

Bring your kids, bring your friends, and come have fun at the AMS Carnival this Saturday, January 24, from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.

You’ll explore the world as you visit the continent-themed classrooms, with activities and games galore. Professional face painting and crazy hair! Food! Prizes in each classroom!

The carnival is not a fundraiser, but there will be a small fee at the door to cover the costs for prizes. Please come out and support this community-building event. Your kids (and your school) will thank you.

Note: Volunteers are still needed. Sign up for a 45-minute shift to work in your child’s classroom. Sign-up sheets are available at each classroom door, or call 276-2240 to volunteer.

The PFD Charitable Contributions Program is a new, secure, and easy way to make a donation to AMS. PA Meeting Canceled

Due to busy end-of-year schedules, the Parent Association meeting scheduled for tonight has been canceled. The PA group will meet up in the New Year, on January 20 at 7:00 pm. All parents are welcome to attend this meeting, which will be held at Title Wave Books; the AMS carnival will be the main topic of conversation.

Auction Items Anyone?

The Wine Mixer Social and Online Auction fundraising team need your help to bring in items for our auction and raffle!

The Wine Mixer Social will be held February 28 and will include a small auction comprising three-to-five items of significant value, plus a raffle. The Online Auction will take place in late spring.

A key focus of these events is to raise money for the teachers training fund as well as other costs associated with maintaining a quality program. As we all know, the teachers are the heart and soul of AMS; these fundraising activities will enable them to further their Montessori education and professional growth so that they may continue to provide the best quality education for our children! Just one year of Montessori Training costs for one teacher are approximately $15,000. Expenses can include tuition, materials, airfare, and lodging.

We are asking parents who either directly contributed to, or helped solicit donations for, previous events to once again help us bring in auction and raffle items that help make these events a success. For those who have not yet had the opportunity to contribute to past events, now is your chance!

PA Meeting + Kelly’s Kitchen Project

All parents are invited to attend the next Parent’s Association (PA) meeting at AMS on Tuesday, December 16. The meeting begins at 7:00 pm.

One PA project now underway is “Kelly’s Kitchen”. PA members are looking for donations to refurbish the AMS kitchen. Needed items include:

Commercial-grade dishwasher (same size/brand as we already have)
Small cutting boards
Spreaders
Knives and a sharpening block
Shelving and cupboards for storage

If you have items to donate, please contact Amanda Ungerecht (toddler teacher/development director) at the school or by email at aungerecht@gmail.com. Amanda is hoping to present the items/or information about the items to Kelly during the last week of school before winter break.

Parent Survival Night: Dec 12 (6-10:00 pm)

Need a night out? Bring your kids to AMS Friday night and they’ll have safe, fun supervision while you attend that holiday party or finish up your shopping. The cost is $30 for the first child and $20 for each sibling. Payment is required when signing up and is considered a donation to participating staff (please leave the "To" line blank in the checks).

There are:

· 20 spots available for children ages 3-12 (enrolled students, siblings, or alumni)
· 4 spots available for children under 3 (must be enrolled at AMS)

Cell Phone Recycling Fundraiser

Lost Ring

A woman's ring was lost in the parking lot (presumably) Wednesday after 3:30pm. If you happen to find it, please turn it in the front desk. It is an antique platinum band with small channel-set diamonds. The ring has high sentimental value to the owner.

Too many clothes?

This time of year you may be checking your little one's clothing for proper size, and figuring out where to take the clothes that no longer fit your growing child. Anchorage's AWAIC (Abused Women's Aid in Crisis) is in **urgent** need of clothing donations.

AWAIC will take all sizes but currently has a dire need for sizes newborn - 4T. The AMS Parent Blog has learned that they have nearly 30 children in this age group (many more then usual) and would be happy to accept any donations of clothing, new or used, at their downtown location. They also accept new stuffed animals (each child is given one upon arrival).

Please consider this current and local need for any donations and take a moment to reach out to local friends beyond the AMS family. You can view their website at the link below or contact their *non* emergency line, also listed on the website. Let's show AWAIC that our AMS Community can come together and support local little ones in need during trying times.

Hard to believe, but the 2008-2009 school year is rapidly approaching... where did the time go? We're looking forward to another exciting school year ~

Are you looking to be the early bird on 2008-2009 AMS volunteer hours? The preschool library is under going a reorganization and your help is needed sorting books and moving a few items around the room. Think of it as a way to get ideas of book titles your kids might like~ and a fun way to easily earn some early volunteer hours.

Or... if outdoor fix-it is more your thing, AMS is also looking for help to install some new outdoor drinking fountains. For either of these 2 volunteer opportunities, please see the AMS Front Desk.

Also... word has it AMS will be launching it's own AMS store within the building this Fall. We've been told there will be fun AMS gear for purchase with proceeds going to support the school. Stay posted for details in the coming months.

Tomorrow, Thursday, June 12th from 10 AM to 1 PM, Ms. Micah's AMS Summer Camp class will be hosting a lemonade stand. PLEASE come join us for a few moments and enjoy a glass of lemonade and some cookies. All will be for sale for 25 cents each... the class will start the day baking the cookies and preparing the lemonade!

If your AMS students aren't at summer camp this week, why not use the chance tomorrow to bring the kids along, say hello and grab a snack? Where did the time go? The 11th Annual Bid Into Spring Auction is nearly upon us ~ but you still have plenty of time to get those donations to AMS. Be it gift cards, gift certificates or items ~ both big + small ~ all will be gratefully accepted.

Another idea: many online stores allow for free shipping of gift cards, some even allow you to email the gift card. An option would be purchasing then emailing the gift card to yourself, printing out the gift card then driving it over to the AMS Front Desk for the Spring Auction. How easy is that?

In addition, there are numerous local options: think coffee, swimming, gym, take-out, cinema, clothing, spa treatments, auto details (summer is upon us...), the list goes on ~ Last year bidders from 25 states participated in our AMS auction. This year let's try to make it all 50!

A Small fits a toddler/pre-schooler and sizes are available up to adult. Portions of the proceeds support Anchorage's Bird Treatment & Learning Center.

We're looking to our dedicated AMS Parent Blog readers & subscribers to spread the word about the upcoming Bid Into Spring Auction. Please help us by emailing your AMS email list and talking to other AMS families. We're looking for gift certificates or donated items for the auction ~ one per family (or more if you want...) would really help put us over our goal!

This year our auction will be entirely online which gives us increased exposure to bidders world-wide. It's looking more like Spring every day, and with the break-up comes our Bid into Spring auction. This year AMS is trying something new...our Spring Auction will be entirely online! As with last year's auction we're looking towards our AMS community for donations. Although we are focusing on gift certificates, all items, both big and small, will be gratefully accepted. Please bring items to the AMS front desk.

If your family is still in need of volunteer hours, consider this: for every $100.00 your family donates, one hour of volunteer service is added to your account!!

Good news! The Empty Bowl Fundraiser was a great success! The AMS Kindergarten, Lower & Upper Elementary students were able to raise $560 for the Beans Cafe. 100% of the funds raised go to Anchorage's Beans Cafe. The organization provides to the hungry and homeless community a hot, nutritious meal, warm and safe shelter and referral assistance to health and human services providers.

You might have noticed the beautiful bowls displayed in front of the AMS reception desk. Those bowls were decorated by our AMS kindergarten, lower and upper elementary students for the Annual Empty Bowl Project which raises funds for the Beans Cafe. The Empty Bowl luncheon will be held Saturday March, 15th from 11 AM - 2 PM in the Egan Center.

Until now the AMS bowls were only for sale to the parents of those students. As of tomorrow the bowls go on sale to any interested buyers. Please stop by the AMS front desk and support the Beans Cafe along with the beautiful work of our AMS students.

Then you know about the local Bundles of Joy Fundraiser. Good News! We have permission from AMS to drop off AMS family donations at the school. Your blog author will be picking up the items on Friday afternoon. Keep in mind I've got what some might call a medium-sized SUV, so unfortunately I can't transport huge items...so think small items, baby clothes, diapers, baby baths, small toys, etc. If you have larger items then PLEASE check out the previous blog entry for multiple drop-off locations. This week is the Annual Bundles of Joy Fundraiser in Anchorage, designed to round up all those baby items mentioned (and more!!!) and then distribute them to needy families and mothers at local shelters. YOU CAN drop off items all week or on Saturday 3/8 drop off ALL your items at the Northway Mall. The collected items are donated to several Anchorage agencies including: Abused Women's Aid in Crisis, the Salvation Army, Catholic Social Services, Passage House, and Southcentral Foundation's Dena A Coy. Last year, the soroptimist clubs collected more than 6,000 items and nearly $500 to support new parents. This year, collection bins will be located at Anchorage public libraries, the Fairview, Spenard and Mountain View Recreation Centers, City Hall, and Cornerstone Clinic in south Anchorage.

Do you or does someone you know play ANY instrument? We're not talking professional level here (tho' that wouldn't be turned down...) but if you've got a guitar, drums, violin, piano, keyboard, ANY other instruments we're leaving out (steel drum? sitar? didgeridoo?) PLEASE email Ann our AMS Music Teacher. She would **love** to set up a time for you to come play for the students. PLUS this would go towards your family volunteer hours! Our AMS students would love to see any level of ability: amateur, hobbyist or professional.

The 30th Anniversary AMS Celebration is this Saturday, Februrary 2nd ! There will be a number of items up for auction, many of which were created by our AMS students. The ConocoPhillips operated Kuparuk facility has earned the OSHA star award for safety. This is your chance to go farther north then most have traveled (above the Arctic Circle, no less!) and see for yourself where the oil comes from... just remember to bring a coat!

eScrip Progress: November numbers are in. All of you participating in eScrip raised $404 in the month of November! That’s nearly an 8-fold increase from our monthly numbers before the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year! Congratulations!

AMS Family needs help

An AMS Family needs our help, they've had a medical emergency and the mother, Kathleen, cannot drive again until June. They need help picking up their kids at school and taking them home. The father, Arlan, is off work on Mondays, so they need help on school days Tuesday through Friday.

For information on how you can help PLEASE see Amy at the front desk, she has all the details including their personal phone numbers. The family is located in East Anchorage.

1. There's no school on Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

2. The upcoming 30th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday February, 2 is the ONLY attendance event of 2008 for AMS. We are having this celebration in lieu of the Spring Auction. Later this Spring there will be an on-line auction to support AMS -- and you'll be able to participate in that from the comfort of your computer chair, couch, etc.

The 30th Anniversary Celebration promises to be a fun-filled evening. Please make sure to get your RSVPs in and ask your fellow AMS friends if they've replied as well... everyone is busy this time of year so please spread the word to the AMS community. We appreciate your help in getting the word out!

AMS Art at Anchorage Museum... referral needed

Several our of upper elementary students have their art work on display at the Anchorage Museum of Art. The exhibit is located in the hallway by Children's Gallery and the works will be on display through January 25th.

A future AMS family (Fall '08) is looking for a part-time nanny with flexible days and hours (or job share). Care is needed for a 16 month-old from M-F, 10 AM - 2 PM. If you or someone you know is interested please contact Tricia at 344-8875.

As these winter days start to get brighter there are plenty of outside options. We're also lucky in Anchorage to have a busy indoor life as well in the winter. The Anchorage Public Library system will be starting up it's reading program for this season, and the Anchorage Museum will open it's museum classes in February. Español at AMS

Spanish Update: Please welcome AMS’ newest Spanish Teacher, Maricela Beltran. In November, Maricela began offering Spanish to the afternoon preschool classes. When you see her in the hallways, be sure to say, “Hola” and “Gracias”!! Karen Padgett will still be singing Spanish songs and reading books in Spanish in the 3- and 5-day morning toddler classes.

If you have any interest in teaching Spanish, particularly in the morning preschool classes and/or the afternoon toddler classes, Maricela & Karen will be glad to share the Spanish Montessori curriculum with you. As Maricela & Karen can attest, formal teaching training is not required. And as Karen can attest, being able to sing well isn’t a requirement, either. Some proficiency with Spanish is obviously helpful. The rewards come when the kids say, “Buenos dias” to you in the hallways. Karen says her ulterior motive for teaching is to find out what *really* goes on those classrooms (and it is INSPIRING!!).

eScrip Contest Update: Congratulations to Angie and Heather’s classrooms!!! Angie’s preschool classroom won the eScrip Classroom Contest award for having the most students’ families & friends signed up on eScrip before Thanksgiving. Heather’s kindergarten classroom won the Contest for having the highest *percentage* of students’ families & friends signed up. Each classroom won $50! Congratulations Angie & Heather & all your students.

During the contest, AMS’ eScrip membership jumped from 100 to 147 participants. At least 8 of the new participants can to attributed to “T.R.” in Heather’s a.m. class. Nice work, kiddo!

eScrip Progress: Approximately 100 AMS families have not yet signed up for eScrip. Over the next couple of months, volunteers will be calling the remaining people not yet signed up and offering to help them get signed up. Please be kind when they call, and please return their call if they leave a message for you J

January 2003 - AMS opens in our current building!

2006 - Merger of the 2 Lower Elementary classrooms

2007 - Opened 3rd morning toddler class, added 3rd afternoon preschool class

As of 12/12/07, 147 people are registered for eScrip to benefit Anchorage Montessori School. We held a contest during parent-teacher conference time in November.
